On the morning of Sunday September 8th, 2024, West Palm Beach Fire Department (WPBFD) will host the 6th Annual WPB 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb to honor and remember all the precious lives lost in the brutal attacks of September 11, 2001.

This event is open to all!

The event features a stair climb of 110 stories, a CrossFit Competition, vendors, a heartening opening ceremony, and a vibrant after-party.

New for this year will be the addition of:

🏃 5K
👟 1 MILE race
🧑‍🚒 HERO CHALLENGE

The HERO CHALLENGE combines the 5K and stair climb events into the ultimate test of strength, endurance, and will!

Participants will start by completing the 5K course followed by the full 110 story stair climb.

The address of the event is 515 N. Flagler Drive (Fifth Third Bank aka The Darth Vader building) in downtown West Palm Beach.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 8am, races and competitions will begin at 9am.

The WPB 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and 5K provides participants a unique way to honor and remember all of the precious lives lost in the brutal attacks of September 11th, 2001.

The 5K and 1 mile race will take participants on an out-and-back course down N. Flagler Dr. along the iconic West Palm Beach waterfront.

FIREFIGHTERS are challenged to enter and run the 5K in BUNKER GEAR!

One half of all proceeds from the event will be donated to @operation300 Operation 300 is an organization that was founded in honor of Special Operations Chief (SEAL) Aaron Carson Vaughn who was KIA on August 6th, 2011 🐸 🔱

The other half of the proceeds will be donated to the @post_fl Pediatric Oncology Support Team, Inc. (POST), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. POST is a psychosocial support team that provides free services to children with cancer as well as their families ❤️

As the day came to an end, we couldn’t help but to be a bit emotional. Lots of time and energy goes into this event and we as a team couldn’t be happier to do it. To say it takes a village is an understatement. But what’s an event without the awesome participants, sponsors, and volunteers?

It’s exactly where we were 5 year ago…just 4 guys from shift climbing stairs. A huge shout out to all of you that attended the WPB 9/11 memorial stair climb today. We honestly can’t thank you enough for helping us never forget as we reflect with every step.

Next year we will be back bigger and better than ever🇺🇸🚒💪

On September 11, 2001, Rick Rescorla, originally scheduled for vacation, was at the World Trade Center due to a colleague's plans.

When the first tower was hit, Rescorla defied official advice and initiated the evacuation of Morgan Stanley's 2,700 employees.

Using his military background, he sang patriotic songs to keep people calm. He successfully evacuated most employees before the second plane hit their tower.

Although he could have left, Rick re-entered the building to help others. He made a final call to his wife before perishing.

His brave actions ensured all but 13 of Morgan Stanley's employees survived.

🇺🇸 Hero of the Week: Welles Crowther 🇺🇸

On Sept.11, New Yorkers demonstrated extraordinary courage and risked their lives to save others. One of these heroes was the man in the red bandana, Welles Crowther.

When hijacked Flight 175 hit the World Trade Center’s South Tower, people on the 78th floor sky lobby huddled together, frightened and confused. There was no escape as far as they could tell. Then, a man with a red bandana covering his nose and mouth suddenly appeared from the wreckage and smoke. He spoke in a calm voice and guided them to a stairway, leading them to safety. The man in the red bandana made three trips to the sky lobby, saving as many people as he could, until the burning building collapsed.Welles Crowther. A few months after 9/11, stories from survivors surfaced about the mysterious man wearing the red bandana. When Alison Crowther read an article about the hero in the New York Times, she knew that man was her son, 24-year-old Welles Crowther. He had carried a red handkerchief since he was a boy. Welles Crowther worked as an equities trader and was also a volunteer firefighter.

Welles Crowther’s bravery and heroism on 9/11 will never be forgotten. As survivor Judy Wein, who was rescued by Crowther notes, “People can live 100 years and not have the compassion, the wherewithal to do what he did.”
